Favourites of 2016

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

I am SO excited for many books, music and films coming out this year but last year was a BLAST with releases. I’m going to go through just a few of my favourites which I strongly encourage you to check out (they are all amazing) and would love to hear any suggestions anyone has of good releases I might have missed!!

First off I have been a huge sucker for books in 2016. I have also read a larger variety with Zoella’s book club. It would be impossible to go through every book I loved in 2016 so here are just a couple of recommendations.

  • Beautiful Broken Things – Sara Barnard

Beautiful Broken Things was released in February and focuses on three girls, Caddy, Rosie and Suzanne. Caddy and Rosie have been best friends since before they can remember. They were inseparable and done everything together. They then went off to different schools and that is where Rosie met Suzanne. And that is when everything changed for Caddy and Rosie. Rosie no longer relied on Caddy for everything and could now relax more with another best friend. Caddy wasn’t used to having a new girl around and starts to get jealous. This book is a perfect read and there was so much that I could relate to. It is an eye-opening story about friendships and the troubles people will go to keep them. I personally loved this book as it wasn’t like anything I had ever read before and I truly enjoyed it.

  • Girl Online: Going Solo – Zoe Sugg

I don’t want to delve too much into this as I am planning on getting a review up of this ASAP but I HAD to put this in my favourites of 2016 as I felt it was a brilliant finish to the Girl Online trilogy. I absolutely adored the whole story and Penny is a character anyone can just fall in love with.

  • If I Was Your Girl – Meredith Russo

This book was beautifully eye-opening and I learnt a LOT from it. The main character, Amanda, has started a new school after being bullied in her old one. The reason I learnt a lot from this book is because Amanda is transgender and Meredith Russo has managed to detail the book so clearly so the reader can adopt Amanda’s mindset whilst reading and can experience what it is like. It is a wonderful book which I loved so much and would recommend to everyone. The storyline was amazing and it was a joy to follow Amanda’s journey and I definitely have a wider eye-sight of the experiences of living transgender.

I also thoroughly enjoyed many movies last year. I also went to the cinema a lot more times than any other year as we’ve just been spoilt with releases.

  • Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates

I went to the cinema to see this on, I think, the release date and I loved every minute of it. It was fast-paced, it was funny, it was memorable and it was exciting. The plot follows two brothers, Mike and Dave (Adam DeVine and Zac Efron) on their journey to find dates to take to their sister’s wedding. They advertise it everywhere and are soon invited to even advertise on TV, that is where they meet many applicants who are eager to join them as their dates.

  • Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children

I absolutely LOVE this trilogy by Ransom Riggs and I also love Asa Butterfield so I HAD to go and see this movie as soon as it came out. For those unfamiliar with the Miss Peregrine’s trilogy, it is about a boy called Jacob, played by Asa Butterfield, who since he was little has been told wonderful, abnormal stories by his grandfather. These stories are from when his grandfather lived in Miss Peregrine’s Home and follow the adventures him and the other peculiar children would get up to. Jake is unsure on whether to believe the stories until he visits the place himself and realises he too has a peculiarity.

  • Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them

I went to see this on release date and again on New Year’s Eve, it is just SO GOOD! The new series by JK Rowling sees Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) on a journey attempting to find the creatures that have escaped his case and ensuring to stay hidden from ‘No-Maj’. He is joined by Tina Goldstein, her sister Queenie Goldstein, and a No-Maj Jacob Kowalski (Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol and Dan Fogler). Let’s also not forget that Ezra Miller stars as the mysterious Credence Barebone which brings even more excitement to the plot and could cause a few problems for the wizarding world.

There have been loads of brilliant music releases last year and it is going to be impossible to pick just three to recommend. So many artists have either released a debut album or a follow-up album and they’ve all been brilliant. Here are just a minor few of the ones I have been loving.

  • Shawn Mendes – Illuminate

After the release of Shawn’s first album, Handwritten, his second album, Illuminate couldn’t come quicker. There is a slight different style to his first album but Illuminate is an amazing follow-up and shows his more mature style of music. With Illuminate being his first album after Stitches blew up the charts, it was the first release to a massive audience and as a huge artist. Shawn has achieved everything he possibly could with this album and this is the start of a huge career ahead of him.

  • James Arthur – Back From The Edge

James is a great example of a comeback and he’s completely smashed it. After being a huge long-term James fan, I was thrilled to hear he was making a music comeback and Back From The Edge is a wonderful album and is everything we could have asked for. His voice is unique and his songs mean something. I will be having this album on repeat, much like his first album, and I cannot wait to hear it live this year.

  • Nathan Sykes – Unfinished Business

Being Nathan’s debut solo album, it is perfect. Every song is melodic and an absolute bop and what is exciting is the fact he has a little bit of everything on there, ballads, upbeat songs, and absolute jams. This album is so brilliant and has something for everyone. His voice is so great and I could listen all day, every day.

These are just a couple of favourites of 2016 and I have so many more! I can’t wait for this year and it’s releases and I know they are going to be brilliant. Hope everyone had a great night last night and happy new year, let’s make 2017 something special!
